X-RAY
Functioning
X-rays are emitted when electrons impact on a metallic anode placed in a low pressure chamber.
Wave lengths: 0,003 to 2nm.
X-rays cross numerous opaque bodies and are more or less absorbed according to the nature of the bodies.
X-rays reveal:
- the nature and structure of the supports (canvas, wood, cartoon)
- the pictorial technique, repentances, or underlying paintings
- the preservation state (pictorial coat, canvas, terracotta ware, porcelain, earthenware.)
- the production technique making of cultured pearls.
Applications
Paintings : this technique is advised by experts, restorers, to discover the different building steps of the work as well as to study canvas and supports.
